THE FILMMAKER BEHIND THE METHOD

Tapan Ghosh

Filmmaker, writer, poet, and actor. Tapan Ghosh writes, directs, and often performs in his own films — made without a written script, built instead on a premise, a structure, and whatever actually happens once the camera starts rolling.

A Storyteller Before a Filmmaker

Ghosh has described himself, in his own words, as a storyteller first. Writing prose and poetry came earlier in his life; acting and directing came later, and once they did, he found the only way to tell a story his own way was to do it himself, in front of and behind the camera. Scriptless Cinema grew out of that instinct, not the other way around.

Writer, Director, Actor

Writer

Prose and poetry came first. The instinct to shape a story through language runs through everything he's made since.

Director

Works without a written script — only a premise and a structure, with events created on the spot and shaped afterward in the edit.

Actor

A storyteller who performs has an advantage: he directly embodies his stories, eliminating the need for others to interpret or portray them.

What Scriptless Cinema Owes Him, and What It Doesn't

Not the Origin of Unscripted Filmmaking

Unscripted, human-first filmmaking has surfaced before, in different forms — cinéma vérité and improvised narrative filmmaking both share roots with it.

The One Who Practiced It Into a Method

Ghosh built and tested this approach across several of his own short films before it had the name Scriptless Cinema attached to it.

An Active Filmmaker, Not a Theorist

The method isn't a written idea sitting on a shelf. It's been shot, edited, and released — repeatedly, in real films.

WHERE THE METHOD GETS PRACTICED

Sippy Productions

Tapan Ghosh writes, directs, and often acts in his own films, produced through Sippy Productions, the Mumbai-based production house where Scriptless Cinema gets made. Films including Ek Tarfa, Shaadi Ka Licence, Kuch Toh Log Kahenge, and Pagalpanti were all built this way — no written dialogue, a premise and a structure instead of a script, with the story found in the footage and shaped in the edit.

Scriptless Cinema is a filmmaking method, not a genre.
No written dialogue, no rehearsed performance — just real people in real situations.
