HOW IT WORKS

The Scriptless Cinema Method

Six stages, one rule running through all of them: nothing said on camera gets decided before it happens. Everything else — who, where, why, what's at stake — gets prepared with real care.

A Method, Not a Set of Steps to Skip

Each stage below depends on the one before it. Skip the preparation in Premise or People, and Discovery has nothing real to find. This isn't a loose or accidental process — it's a discipline that happens to leave one specific thing open: the words.

The Six Stages, In Practice

Premise

A real situation with real emotional stakes gets defined before anything else. Not a plot — a condition someone has to actually move through.

People

Chosen for who they are and how they instinctively respond, not cast to perform a character written on paper.

Situations

Built to be lived through, not blocked and rehearsed. Real relationships, real pressure, real consequence.

Filming

Minimal predetermined dialogue. What happens, happens once — and whatever comes out of it, including silences and things nobody expected, becomes usable material.

Discovery

The footage gets reviewed for what it actually holds — emotional truth, turning points, a story that reveals itself rather than one that was already decided.

Edit

Where the real writing happens. Since nothing was scripted before filming, the editor becomes arguably the last and most important storyteller in the process.

What's Prepared, and What Isn't

Prepared in Advance

The premise, the people, the situation, and the emotional stakes. None of this is left to chance.

Left Open

The exact dialogue, the reactions, and a good deal of the final narrative shape — none of which can honestly exist until the moment that produces it.

Where the Two Meet

In the edit. This is the point where careful preparation and unplanned reality get shaped into a single, coherent film.

WHY THE METHOD WORKS THIS WAY

Built on an Idea From Engineering

The method rests on one borrowed idea: the truest record of anything complex is what actually got built, not what was originally planned. Applied to filmmaking, that means the footage is treated as the source of truth, not a deviation to correct in the edit.

The filmmaker who developed it

Scriptless Cinema is a filmmaking method, not a genre.
No written dialogue, no rehearsed performance — just real people in real situations.
